NYFA (The New York Foundation for the Arts) in Partnership with ARTMORPHEUS Workshop for Independent Artists in Greater Boston

Visual, performing, literary artists and filmmakers and all other creative workers are encouraged to attend.

Delivered by Amber Hawk Swanson, Consultant to the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA). See presenter biography at bottom.

WHAT: “Independent Artist” is a daylong workshop on professional development that expands the skill set and knowledge of professional artists. This one-day intensive course delivers practical information through short lectures, hands-on activities and individual coaching to develop new skills and to impact the entire group's awareness and career momentum.

Designed to empower participants to build sustainable careers, the course will cover:

  • Career Planning (Introduction)
  • Crafting effective goals and objectives
  • Defining Yourself and Defining Your Audience
  • Speaking and writing about your work
  • Marketing Strategies (Including Using the Internet as a Tool)
  • Networking for Artists
  • Review of Artist "Packet"
  • Audience Development
  • Funding your work

WHO:  The workshop is open to artists across disciplines, including visual, literary, film, theatre, dance/performance, new media and other artists.

DATE/TIME:     Saturday December 11th 2010 from 10AM to 5PM

LOCATION:      The Boston Center for the Arts, Plaza Black Box Theater, 539 Tremont St., Boston

Participants should plan to arrive early as the workshop will start on time and commit to show up on time and to stay for the entire day to be accepted into the workshop.

This workshop is subsidized with support from the Boston Foundation and the Boston Center for the Arts.

SUPPLY LIST/What Artists Should Bring (The below are optional but strongly suggested):

  • 10 digital work samples in any format on CD or DVD
  • Artist Statement
  • Pen/Pencil with an eraser
  • A notebook
  • 2 copies of a one or two page resume
  • 300 word max artist bio
  • An artist statement
  • A calculator
  • A sweatshirt/sweater for comfort (optional).

NOTE: The workshop will provide a lunch but participants with special dietary needs should bring a sack lunch to ensure their needs are being met.

You may pay by credit card or check. Eventbrite conducts all credit card transactions; but you do not have to have a special account to use your card.

REFUND POLICY: All cancellations and refund requests must be made in writing by December 6. These requests carry a $10.00 administrative charge. Full refunds minus the administrative fee will be granted on written requests received no later than December 6, 2010. After that date, no refunds will be granted.

To be eligible for the student discounted registration, you must present a valid Student ID when you check in at the Conference.

Scholarships

Full and partial scholarships are based on financial need and relevance of the workshop to the applicant's current professional development goals. Artists making an annual, adjusted gross income of $20,000 or less are eligible to apply.

In exchange for partial or full scholarship assistance, we don't require it but would greatly appreciate your help with one or more of the following (please indicate any tasks that you would be available to help with):

  • Copying and collating handouts (1-2 hours; 1-2 days before event)
  • Set up (one hour before event)
  • Clean up (one hour)
  • Registration (day of event)
  • Admin assistance (before/after -at a mutually convenient time- or at event) tasks may include creating list of registrants, distributing, collecting and logging program evaluations, etc.
  • Taking Photographs of the event (*with photo release)
  • Writing and submitting a report of the event for our blog
  • Social media assistance (1-2 hours)

Scholarship recipients will be notified by email by December 5th, 2010.

Scholarships are non-transferable and non-refundable.

Hawk Swanson will also be available for one-on-one consultations with artists on Friday December 10th 2010 from 4 –6PM at ARTMORPHEUS. Six 20-minute slots will be available for booking beginning on 11/26/2010 for a fee of $20 payable to NYFA. PRESENTER BIOGRAPHY

Amber Hawk Swanson is a professional development and grants writing consultant working closely with the  Learning Department of New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA). Formerly Officer, NYFA Source and Instructor, NYFA MARK (2008-10), Hawk Swanson administered all aspects of Source, the nation's most comprehensive online database of programs and resources for artists working in all disciplines. She also administered all aspects of MARK, NYFA's competitive program for visual artists living outside of NYC seeking focus on the professional side of their creative practice. In 2010 Hawk Swanson taught the MARK program in Buffalo, Syracuse, Troy, Rosendale, and Riverhead, NY while also conducting NYFA Source fundraising seminars in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Austin, Houston, Chicago, Philadelphia, and NYC. Prior to her positions at NYFA, Hawk Swanson was a Host/Producer at Chicago Public Radio's content sharing, social networking website and radio station, Vocalo.org and the Visual Arts Faculty Member for the Chicago Arts Program of the Associated Colleges Midwest.

Also a video and performance artist, Amber Hawk Swanson lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Recent exhibitions include Locust Projects (solo, Miami), Non Grata Art Container (Estonia), Georgia State University (Atlanta), Rosslyn Cultural Center (Virginia), Maryland Art Place (Baltimore), and The Redhouse (Syracuse, NY). Recent residencies include Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts (NYC), Fountainhead (Miami) and Vermont Studio Center (on scholarship). Recent visiting artist appointments include East Carolina University (Graduate Program, Greenville, NC), Hunter College (Studio Arts and Film Departments NYC), and Fashion Institute of Technology, FIT (Photography Department, NYC). Her work is included in the permanent and MPP collections of the Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago) and has been profiled and reviewed in Map Magazine, The Associated Press, Time Out Chicago, and Flavorpill. Hawk Swanson holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (Studio Arts).
